South Korea names companies to carry out $1 billion AI compute project

( July 29, 2025, 01:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea has designated three local companies to undertake a 1.46 trillion won ($1.05 billion) project to secure massive computing power, mostly for use by domestic artificial intelligence developers. Naver Cloud, NHN Cloud, and Kakao Corp have now been chosen to purchase some 13,000 high-end GPUs and allow domestic AI developers to use them under a government project to quickly increase national AI infrastructure, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT. The ministry said it expects some of the newly purchased GPUs to be put into operation close to the end of the year. The government has initiated the project involving private companies because its plan to build a national AI computing center is taking some time to materialize.
