Meta won't sign EU AI Act code of practice for general-purpose AI models

( July 18, 2025, 12:20 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Meta Platforms will not sign the code of practice meant to facilitate compliance with the EU AI Act's rules for general-purpose AI models, which will start to apply on Aug. 2. The tech company will therefore figure out its own way to comply with the law's requirement. Although the code is voluntary, the European Commission says it will provide the benchmark for AI model providers to demonstrate their compliance. Meta's decision comes even after the commission clarified that signatories will be able to opt out from specific chapters of the code. Mistral and OpenAI have said that they will sign the code.Full statement from Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, follows....
