Perplexity AI, BBC spat pits copyright against Google monopoly accusations

By Frank Hersey ( June 20, 2025, 14:15 GMT | Insight) -- The BBC has written to large language model-based search engine provider Perplexity AI with a threat of legal action over what it says is the “verbatim” reproduction of its content without permission. Perplexity tells MLex that the BBC’s actions demonstrate its attempts to “preserve Google’s illegal monopoly.” The BBC has for the first time threatened a generative AI company with legal action over copyright allegations. The corporation has written to Perplexity demanding that it stop using BBC content and delete BBC data held. The BBC is also proposing compensation for material it alleges has already been used, reports BBC News....
