UK government rejects lawmakers' AI demands on data bill as EU data adequacy looms

By Frank Hersey ( June 10, 2025, 18:36 GMT | Insight) -- The UK creative sector and AI developers are no closer to gaining clarity after the government today voted to reject the House of Lords’ call for fresh legislation dedicated to the issue of AI and copyright. Instead, the government substituted much more limited changes to timelines for government reports on the issues, albeit to now consider ways of enforcement and systems developed abroad. The minister leading debate raised his concerns that the EU-UK adequacy agreement could now be impacted by the delay to the data reform bill being used as a battleground for AI copyright issues. A lawmaker told MLex the Lords will push again.The UK government took a small step toward the demands of the House of Lords, the upper revising chamber, which has called on the executive to commit to separate legislation to protect copyright holders from AI model development via transparency mechanisms. The government forced through its rejection of their calls with a vote that passed its amendment for further reports, some with a shortened timeframe....
