New AI strategy to fuel growth, protect public, lead by example, UK regulator says

( June 6, 2025, 10:09 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Online platforms, media and telecom companies have been urged to prioritize safety in their use of AI under a new 2026/2026 strategy published today by UK regulator Ofcom. With an approach that aims to "support growth, safeguard the public, and lead by example,"  the watchdog said it will expand trials of its own AI tools and tackle rising AI-enabled risks on online platforms, including deepfakes and algorithmic harms, through enforcement of the UK Online Safety Act. Ofcom said it also wants to harness innovation by strengthening collaboration with other UK regulators on emerging technologies such as agentic AI where systems can operate autonomously.Statement follows.
