Replika’s chatbot maker faces EUR5 million sanction by Italian DPA

By Luca Bertuzzi ( May 19, 2025, 14:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Luka Inc, the US company that provides the chatbot Replika, has seen the Italian data protection authority impose a sanction of 5 million euros and open an investigation, over the treatment of personal data by its generative AI system. Replika can produce vocal and textual answers that allows users to create a virtual friend. The Italian DPA considers that Luka Inc has not found an appropriate legal basis for processing data under the GDPR, has an inadequate privacy policy, and has failed to verify users’ ages. The regulator launched an additional inquiry to assess the risk-mitigation measures the company put in place, and the type of data being processed.Full statement follows (in Italian)....
