EU Parliament committee endorses update to CSAM directive

( May 13, 2025, 10:36 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Starting with a comprehensive update to its legal framework, a European Parliament committee backed today a series of legislative changes aimed at strengthening the fight against child sexual abuse. The update revises EU definitions to capture emerging tech-enabled crimes in the directive on sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children — criminalizing, for instance, the use of artificial intelligence for abuse and livestreaming CSAM — while proposing stiffer penalties, such as raising maximum sentences and abolishing limitation periods. The recast directive is not the same as the draft law aiming to prevent and remove online CSAM, which remains stuck in negotiations with EU governments.The press release follows:...
