Work at AI firms in lieu of military service, South Korean lawmakers propose

( April 16, 2025, 07:44 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A group of lawmakers from the party that holds a majority in South Korea’s legislature has proposed a bill to revise the Military Service Act to allow young men to work at artificial intelligence companies for a certain period instead of performing compulsory military service. Hwang Jung-a from the Democratic Party of Korea, who led the proposal along with 15 colleagues, said in a statement that the special treatment has been among the measures demanded by AI companies to attract young talent. She noted that AI has emerged as a core strategic technology but is not included in the list of sectors eligible for special military service treatment. All young men are required to serve in the military for 18-21 months in South Korea, which is still technically at war with North Korea, since the conflict in the 1950s only ended in an armistice. .The statement, in Korean, is attached....
