Anthropic defeats US preliminary injunction motion from music publishers

( March 26, 2025, 00:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A group of music publishers have lost their motion for a preliminary injunction blocking Anthropic from using song lyrics to train its large language models, with a federal judge in San Francisco ruling that the requested injunction ran the risk of being overly broad and that the publishers failed to show a likelihood of irreparable harm in the absence of an injunction. "The undefined nature of the relief sought here casts a long shadow over Publishers’ request," US District Judge Eumi K. Lee wrote in denying the injunction to Universal Music, Concord Music Group and other publishers. "The Court does not have unfettered discretion to issue an injunction that may be overbroad because it includes works for which Publishers may not have established ownership or control."See attached document....
