Generative AI providers in UK warned of responsibilities under Online Safety Act

( November 8, 2024, 12:08 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Ofcom, the UK's online safety regulator, has reminded providers of generative AI tools on websites or apps that the UK’s Online Safety Act does apply to them. In an open letter, Ofcom said that where services can be categorized as offering search, or as “user-to-user” services if they have a way for users to create a chatbot or any kind of group chat, then they are in the scope of the Online Safety Act. The letter was triggered by recent cases of online harm, including the death of a US teenager who'd developed a relationship with a chatbot from Character.AI, as well as the discovery that bots are available that have been trained to resemble children who've died as a result of online harms in the UK....
