South Korea to ease regulations to accelerate chip project under AI initiatives

( October 26, 2026, 02:36 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources on Friday announced measures to streamline regulations and accelerate plans to build a semiconductor cluster in the country’s southwestern region. The plans form part of the government’s three artificial-intelligence megaprojects. The ministry plans to amend the Industrial Sites and Development Act to allow permitting, compensation and design work for semiconductor industrial complexes to proceed rapidly and simultaneously, sharply reducing the time from site development to the start of fabrication operations. The government also plans to consult labor and management representatives on possible exemptions from working-hour restrictions for key semiconductor research and development personnel in special zones, allowing them to work longer hours on research than the law would otherwise permit when needed. The statement is attached (in Korean)....
