Platforms urged to tackle AI threats to elections with UK regulator

( October 13, 2026, 09:56 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Online platforms have been urged to cooperate more with UK authorities to tackle growing online threats to elections in a report published Tuesday by a committee set up to advise communications watchdog Ofcom. The committee asked the regulator to expand its research into emerging threats, particularly generative AI, to straighten the evidence base on how it affects democracy. The report found that greater cooperation between government, online services, law enforcement and regulators is needed because Ofcom has limited powers around misinformation and disinformation under the Online Safety Act. Statement follows.
