EU countries split over calls to further delay new Emissions Trading System
By Louis de Briant ( October 1, 2026, 15:50 GMT | Insight) -- Italy and Czechia are asking EU leaders to consider delaying the launch of the EU's new carbon market for buildings and road transport beyond 2028 due to the energy crisis, while Estonia has also called for a further postponement. Six other EU countries oppose further delays or intervention in the system's market-based carbon price. Italy and Czechia aim to raise the issue with EU leaders when they meet in Brussels on Oct. 15-16.A further delay to the EU's Emissions Trading System for buildings and road transport, or ETS2, is drawing opposing views from member states as governments negotiate the wider review of the bloc's carbon market....
