Japan proposes strict rules for AI, statistical-data use without consent

( October 1, 2026, 09:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s data protection authority proposed Thursday to impose strict requirements on providers and recipients of personal data seeking to use an exemption from obtaining individuals’ consent for artificial intelligence development and other statistical purposes. The Personal Information Protection Commission, preparing implementation rules for the amended privacy law due to take effect around early 2028, proposed requiring data recipients to safeguard the data and prevent its use beyond the stated statistical purposes.
