By Mike Swift ( September 24, 2026, 23:32 GMT | Insight) -- A large group of US state attorneys general called on federal lawmakers to take "immediate" action on AI safety, warning that the recent Hugging Face attack shows strong federal oversight of frontier AI models is needed as quickly as possible. The states called for Congress to move in six key areas, including mandatory federal safety testing and standards under the direction of federal regulators and backed by performance benchmarks. The states also called for legislation that would give government investigators "direct access to books and records" of frontier AI labs, including the ability to make public findings of incidents.The attorneys general of nearly half of US states, including New York and California, sent a strongly worded letter to Congress on Thursday seeking "immediate" action on safety with respect to artificial intelligence, including federal oversight of safety testing and standards to avoid "future disasters."...
