UK govt plans for information defense agency raise Ofcom overlap questions

Labour lawmaker Chi Onwurah welcomed the proposal but said Ofcom is currently "ill-equipped" to tackle misinformation from domestic sources, which the agency is not expected to cover. While the government has yet to detail the new unit's remit, MLex understands initial work is being led by the Office for the Prime Minister and Cabinet, with social media companies also involved.The UK government's plans to establish a new National Centre for Information Defense to fight "hostile state information attacks" were met with questions about potential overlaps with Ofcom's remit to tackle disinformation and misinformation under the Online Safety Act....
