Tackle immediate AI risks before future existential threats, UK center says

( September 23, 2026, 11:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Immediate risks posed by frontier AI models, not future existential threats, should be the focus of government and regulatory action, the UK's Alan Turing Institute said in a report Wednesday. The national AI research center argued that the UK testing AI models in isolation was not sufficient and urged stronger AI verification and assurance to verify how systems behave in "real-world settings." It identified cybersecurity, democratic instability, misalignment, loss of meaningful human control and chemical and biological threats as areas where immediate action was needed and called for formalized international testing and verification regimes.Statement follows.
