Thailand competition regulator fines Shopee for violating unfair-trade rules
( September 18, 2026, 05:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Thailand’s competition regulator on Friday said that e-commerce platform Shopee’s local unit was found to have violated competition law by unfairly using its superior bargaining power over sellers through its “Free Shipping Special” and “10% Coins Cashback” promotional programs. The Trade Competition Commission of Thailand found that selected sellers were automatically enrolled in the programs between June 2020 and August 2021 without prior consent, with additional fees imposed after free-trial periods unless sellers completed an opt-out process. The commission rejected Shopee’s argument that other retail and social-commerce channels were substitutes for e-marketplaces, defining a narrower e-marketplace market in which Shopee had a 44.49 percent share in 2020. The commission imposed an administrative fine calculated at up to 10 percent of Shopee’s turnover in the year of the offense.Decision attached (in Thai)....
