Data centers downgraded, EU govts get more say under draft electricity compromise

( September 17, 2026, 12:47 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Data centers and energy-intensive industries would no longer be explicitly prioritized for access to scarce electricity grid capacity under a compromise text prepared for EU countries. The draft, seen by MLex, amends a European Commission legislative proposal presented alongside its Electrification Action Plan. It would give national governments more say over criteria for grid access, but it retains the commission's proposed requirement that electricity should not be taxed more heavily than natural gas. EU countries will discuss the draft on Sept. 22.Draft compromise text is listed below....
