Legislation proposing changes to new merger regime passes Australian parliament

( September 10, 2026, 07:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Legislation to amend the mandatory merger regime, replacing automatic voiding of non-notified acquisitions with a Federal Court process, has passed the Australian parliament, the government said. In a joint statement on Thursday, Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino and Assistant Competition Minister Andrew Leigh said that the 2026 Treasury Laws Amendment (Strengthening Accountability for Tax Adviser Misconduct and other Measures) Bill will improve the new merger system. The bill will also allow extensions to the 12-month merger clearance period and narrow notification requirements for some minority investments.Statement follows.
