US House Democrats advocate for tough vetting of Union Pacific merger's labor impacts

( September 4, 2026, 18:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A coalition of 101 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives signed onto a joint letter to the US Surface Transportation Board urging the federal agency to meticulously scrutinize the labor impact of Union Pacific Railroad's proposed buyout of competitor Norfolk Southern Railway, and to impose whatever regulatory conditions are necessary to guarantee that unionized workers do not suffer as a result of the merger. "We encourage the Board to conduct a thorough investigation that gives full weight to the jobs, safety, and dignity of the workers who keep our rail system moving, and ensures that no part of this transaction leaves workers with fewer rights than they have today," the US representatives wrote.Full statement follows.
