South Korean defense ministry to spend 55% more on AI, new tech in 2027
( September 3, 2026, 06:37 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense said Thursday it plans to sharply increase spending on projects involving the development and adoption of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies for defense activities in 2027. It said it would allocate 772.7 billion won ($568.2 million) of its annual budget to the development and deployment of AI-based systems and manned-unmanned teaming systems in 2027, a 55.5 percent increase from this year. The ministry also plans to spend 77.6 billion won on new projects to develop semiconductors for use in defense systems and advanced aircraft-propulsion technologies as well as on new research into laser and quantum technologies. The spending is part of the country’s plan to increase its national defense budget by 8.2 percent to 73.3 trillion won in 2027.The statement is attached (in Korean)....
