By Sean Maguire ( August 31, 2026, 06:29 GMT | Insight) -- Australia has released draft changes to the 1988 Privacy Act that would introduce a limited right to erasure from large digital platforms, a fair and reasonable test for data handling, stronger consent rules and a 72-hour deadline to notify the privacy watchdog of eligible data breaches. The second tranche of privacy law changes would cover major social media, messaging, email, gaming and streaming services, but includes exceptions. It would apply general privacy rules to smart glasses and other emerging technologies.
