China seeks feedback on road-safety law revision covering autonomous vehicles

( August 31, 2026, 06:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s legislature is seeking public feedback through Sept. 26 on a draft revision to the Road Traffic Safety Law that would establish the country’s first dedicated statutory framework for autonomous vehicles. The draft, published Friday, sets conditions for activating automated-driving functions and makes manufacturers or importers responsible for traffic violations committed while those functions are active, unless they prove the violation was unrelated to the technology. It also introduces requirements covering accident-data access, compulsory insurance, data protection, safety assessments and recalls.
