OpenAI facing investigation by Alabama AG into AI-driven Hugging Face hack

( August 24, 2026, 21:56 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has launched an investigation into OpenAI over an experimental AI model that allegedly gained unauthorized access to computer networks and was involved in a days-long hack of AI company Hugging Face. Marshall subpoenaed OpenAI for documents and information to determine if the company's safety controls and oversight violated Alabama's consumer protection laws, following a multistate demand that OpenAI halt the tests behind the hacking until they can be conducted safely. "Ultimately, I believe states have to act to protect their consumers while striking the appropriate balance to foster innovation and ensure America's global competitiveness," Marshall said.Full press release follows.
