South Korea's Network Act aims to curb digital harms, protect users, KMCC says

( August 21, 2026, 05:51 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s revised Network Act is intended to address social harms arising from changes in the digital environment and strengthen user protection, the country’s communications regulator said in response to an Aug. 7 letter from members of the US House Judiciary Committee raising concerns about the law’s impact on free speech. The Korea Media and Communications Commission said Friday that it sent a response to the US lawmakers on Thursday, without disclosing the full letter. The KMCC said the law requires large online platforms to establish self-regulatory policies without government intervention and excludes platform companies from sanctions related to the violation of the new obligations under the law. The law also exempts news organizations from such obligations and from enhanced damages for reporting in the public interest. The South Korean government will continue to uphold freedom of expression and protect a free and vibrant digital public sphere, the agency said. The statement follows (in Korean)....
