Portugal regulator’s draft spectrum renewals raise EU lawmaker’s concerns

( August 14, 2026, 10:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Paulo Cunha, a member of the European Parliament's European People’s Party group, has asked the European Commission whether spectrum renewals of 6-14 years — proposed by Anacom, Portugal’s telecom regulator — would threaten investment in 5G and 6G networks and conflict with the EU's proposed Digital Networks Act. Under the DNA, radio spectrum usage rights would in principle be granted for an unlimited duration by default. Portugal’s incumbent telecom operator MEO, telecom and media group NOS and Vodafone Portugal requested 20-year renewals for spectrum-use rights in the 800-, 900-, 1800- and 2600-megahertz bands, the licenses for which will expire in 2027.Full text below:...
