Japan updates content-moderation guidelines
( August 7, 2026, 04:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications revised content-moderation guidelines Thursday under the Information Distribution Platform Act to include new examples of illegal information, including impersonation-based fake investment advertisements, following amendments to the Penal Code that took effect in June 2025, and requests or inducements to engage in "money transfer crimes," following amendments to the Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds that took effect in July 2026. The ministry also finalized the second revision of the guidelines following a public consultation in July that drew 21 submissions, publishing its responses alongside the final guidelines.
