The judgment casts into doubt a mechanism which supporters say is crucial to the efficient market operation of patent licensing.The future of patent pool licensing for standard essential patents, or SEPs, is uncertain after the UK Supreme Court ruled on Monday that patent pools are bound by FRAND obligations. The ruling risks pulling the carpet out from under the patent pool industry which argues that it is the only way for some companies to meet their licensing obligations at a reasonable price....
