Apple affiliates sanctioned over Siri data practices, data transfers in South Korea

Ltd., have been sanctioned by South Korea’s privacy regulator over Siri-related data processing practices and violations of cross-border data-transfer rules. The Personal Information Protection Commission said Thursday that it fined Apple Distribution International Limited 252 million won ($171,801) for collecting and using Siri voice recordings and transcripts for service improvements without obtaining separate user consent until August 2019 and for continuing to use transcripts without a valid legal basis after it began obtaining separate consent for the use of voice recordings. The PIPC also ordered Apple Services Pte. Ltd. to strengthen its compliance with cross-border data-transfer requirements by including legally required disclosures in its privacy policy.
