Sports sanctions must 'be amenable to judicial review' under EU law, ECJ says

( July 16, 2026, 09:53 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A disciplinary sanction in sports that prohibits an individual's pursuit of a professional activity across all EU countries breaches freedoms of movement guaranteed by EU law, the bloc's top court said on Thursday. A restriction could be justified, however, if it pursues a legitimate public-interest goal and if it is proportionate, the EU Court of Justice said. Individuals must also have an effective legal remedy against such sanctions. The ruling stems from an Italian football dispute in which club directors were given global professional bans by FIFA, and it will be for the Rome administrative court to judge whether the legal justifications are met in this specific case.Press release follows. The judgment will be available here as soon as published by the court. Case references are C-424/24 & C-425/24. ...
