Australia to establish Office of AI to coordinate national AI policy

( July 14, 2026, 13:04 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Australian government will establish a new Office of AI within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to coordinate the country's AI policy and develop national AI standards, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will announce. In a speech to be delivered Wednesday in Sydney, Albanese will say the new office will work with Industry and Innovation Minister Tim Ayres and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Andrew Charlton to “co-ordinate the design of new Australian Standards” and to bring together the AI-related work other ministers are undertaking across government. He will say that the framework will coordinate policy across areas including energy, copyright, productivity, employment, education, online safety, defense and national security.Speech excerpt follows....
