( July 7, 2026, 15:28 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Governments and regulators shaping AI rules should prioritize public participation to strengthen accountability, democratic oversight and legitimacy, researchers and civil society groups said in a paper published Tuesday. The group, which launched new initiative Citizen’s Track on the sidelines of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, Switzerland, warned that “powerful AI companies and nation states are pushing both for and against stronger regulation.” The paper proposes infrastructure for public input, and calls for more funding for democratic AI projects and for more transnational collaboration on AI regulation.Statement follows.
