Consumer groups warn against US Congress killing state AI enforcement

( June 18, 2026, 19:05 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Demand Progress announced that it and more than 130 other civil society groups wrote to ask US congressional leaders to reject legislation that they said would effectively kill state artificial intelligence safeguards. The letter warns that the “Great American Artificial Intelligence Act” would impose a federal ban preventing states from regulating AI. “Right now, states are the only enforcers in the country doing anything to protect the public from AI harms,” the letter said. “In the process they've not only passed legislation, but carefully worked to not create the patchwork that industry warns of.
