USTR proposes tariff rate of up to 12.5% on 60 countries over forced labor

( June 3, 2026, 12:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Office of the US Trade Representative has proposed tariff rates of up to 12.5 percent on 60 countries for failing to enforce prohibitions on forced labor imports, finding the actions burden US commerce under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. USTR said all countries would face a 12.5 percent tariff unless they have a full or partial forced labor prohibition mechanism or committed to one through an agreement with the US, in which case they would have a 10 percent tariff rate. The USTR report says 54 countries in the probe have failed to impose and enforce a prohibition, and six economies — Canada, Ecuador, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, and Pakistan — have failed to enforce a forced labor prohibition mechanism.
