Ampol-EG deal approved by Australian competition watchdog with conditions

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said the proposed merger would likely have substantially lessened competition in 39 local fuel markets by removing a close competitor and increasing market concentration. To address this, the watchdog required Ampol to divest 41 overlapping retail fuel sites to Metro Petroluem — an approved independent buyer — which removes direct overlaps and reduces Ampol’s market power.
