Brazil’s government warns against new US threat of 25 percent tariffs
( June 2, 2026, 18:21 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Brazilian administration has issued a statement criticizing the proposed 25 percent US tariff on Brazilian goods, as announced by the Office of the US Trade Representative on Monday. The government said there is “no reason” to adopt such measures or to target the instant payment system known as PIX. It also warned that the tariff could harm the United States’ standing as a trade partner, pointing to first-quarter 2026 data showing US exports rose by 9.4 percent, the lowest level on record. Criticism was also leveled at the Bolsonaro family after Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro and a right-wing presidential contender, recently met with President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss relations between the two countries.Press release follows (in Portuguese):...
