South Korean committee approves bill expanding NIS role in suspected cyberattacks

( May 8, 2026, 07:05 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s parliamentary intelligence committee on Thursday approved a bill that would expand the National Intelligence Service’s cybersecurity role in suspected hacking incidents affecting private companies and formally add "economic security" to its mandate. The amendment would allow the spy agency to collect, analyze and share intelligence on supply-chain stability, strategic technologies and cyber activity suspected of involving international or state-backed hacking groups. It would also permit field inspections, document requests and interviews where needed to determine whether such groups were behind cyberattacks before attribution is fully established. The bill cites recent hacking incidents involving major telecom operators, including SK Telecom and KT, as evidence of the need for a faster national-level cyber response. The bill requires further parliamentary approval, including a review by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and a plenary vote.Draft amendment is attached (in Korean)....
