Google seeks new trial, judgment in Calif. social media addiction case

( May 7, 2026, 16:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google and YouTube asked a US federal judge to grant a new trial and judgment in a state case over addictive design on the platform. They said the award of punitive damages should be set aside because the plaintiff failed to adduce substantial evidence from which a jury could have found by clear and convincing evidence that YouTube acted with the requisite “oppression, fraud, or malice” necessary to support an award. Also, while the plaintiff argued that her claims do not implicate the First Amendment because they don't target speech, the evidence adduced, and the arguments presented by counsel, made clear that the jury’s verdict against YouTube was directly tied to its expressive curation of content and dissemination of protected speech.See attached file. ...
