China cites AI labeling violations in crackdown on 'self-media' accounts

( May 3, 2026, 08:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s internet regulator flagged failures to label AI-generated content, cite sources for information related to domestic and international current affairs, public policy and social events, and disclose fictionalized or dramatized content as part of a crackdown on so called "self-media" accounts. Authorities said the accounts had misled the public and disrupted the online ecosystem through posts involving politics and other sensitive topics. The cases involved major Chinese platforms including Douyin, Kuaishou, Bilibili, Sina Weibo and WeChat. Regulators said they had ordered platforms to conduct thorough self-inspections and rectifications, resulting in penalties against more than 98,000 offending accounts.Statement follows (in Chinese). ...
