US Republicans warn South Korea against targeting US companies, cite Coupang case

In a letter to South Korean Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha in Washington, members of the Republican Study Committee specifically cited Coupang, arguing that despite being the largest source of US foreign direct investment in South Korea, the company faces government threats to revoke its business licenses, “indiscriminate” raids on its Seoul office and new regulatory requirements. Referring to the November 2025 data breach as a “low-sensitivity data leak,” the lawmakers claimed that South Korea used the incident as leverage to target Coupang.
