US House Republicans propose federal privacy legislation

( April 22, 2026, 14:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Republicans in the US House of Representatives are proposing two new pieces of national privacy legislation: the "Guidelines for Use, Access, and Responsible Disclosure of Financial Data Act," or "GUARD Financial Data Act," and the "Securing and Establishing Consumer Uniform Rights and Enforcement over Data Act," or "SECURE Data Act." The goal of the SECURE Data Act is to "establish a national framework for consumer privacy rights and the protection of personal data, and for other purposes," and it includes sections regulating data brokers, cross-border data flows, data security and other data protection elements. Included is a broad preemption of state laws, with a section saying "no State or political subdivision of a State may prescribe, maintain, or enforce any law, rule, regulation, requirement, standard, or other provision having the force and effect of law, if such law, rule, regulation, requirement, standard, or other provision relates to the provisions of this Act."Statement follows in full.
