2Apply collected 'excessive personal information,' Australian privacy watchdog says

( April 22, 2026, 00:21 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: 2Apply rental technology platform, operated by InspectRealEstate, collected excessive personal information and did so by unfair means, according to Australia’s privacy watchdog. In a Wednesday determination, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, said that InspectRealEstate would need to cease collecting information from prospective renters including gender, student status, citizenship status and visa expiry, and details of previous living history. The watchdog said 2Apply had contravened Australian privacy law, but the platform had “laudably agreed” to change how it collects personal information “on a without-admissions basis.” Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind said other rent technology platforms should adapt their practices to be consistent with the watchdog’s findings. Statement follows. Determination attached. ...
