Japan newspaper association calls on Google to allow opt-out of news use in AI search

( April 21, 2026, 05:06 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association urged Google to respect the rights of news-content owners and to provide an opt-out mechanism for the use of their content in generative AI search services, including AI Overview and AI Mode. Google does not allow publishers to refuse the use of their content for AI-powered search features if they permit its use for conventional search services, the association said on Monday. It added that the practice could constitute an abuse of a superior bargaining position under Japan’s Antimonopoly Act. The association criticized what it described as “free-riding” on news content and called on the government to swiftly introduce measures to protect publishers’ rights.Statement follows (in Japanese)....
