Australian federal court issues practice note for generative AI usage

( April 16, 2026, 07:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Federal Court of Australia has issued a practice note for the usage of generative AI by those who appear in court. In a statement Thursday, Chief Justice Debra Mortimer said that while AI could increase efficiency, it must be used "appropriately, responsibly and with due care." Mortimer warned that the use of AI to present false or inaccurate information to the court in pleadings, affidavits, expert reports or written submissions was "unacceptable," and could result in financial or legal consequences. She warned against inputting any confidential information in an AI tool as users may not know who can access it. The use of generative AI and how it is specifically used will need to be disclosed at the beginning of any document submitted to the court, Mortimer said. Statement follows....
