Tech company in China's Zhejiang fined over data breach amid broader online crackdown

( April 15, 2026, 04:03 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A Hangzhou-based technology company was fined 50,000 yuan ($7,330) and issued a warning and rectification order for failing to take necessary measures to safeguard data, in violation of China’s Cybersecurity and Data Security laws, the Zhejiang internet regulator said in a March enforcement update. Authorities found the company's database had been compromised through a weak-password vulnerability, allowing overseas hackers to exfiltrate data. Separately, local authorities summoned 40 online accounts for regulatory talks, ordered rectifications at 174 entities and canceled filings for 44 websites, while providing administrative guidance to 90 operators. Cyberspace regulators and major platforms handled about 40,000 user complaints and referred eight websites with missing or false registrations to the provincial communications authority for further action.Statement follows (in Chinese). ...
