German investment in peatland restoration wins EU approval

( April 14, 2026, 09:57 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A €1.3 billion German program to incentivize the rewetting of farmed peatlands has received EU state aid approval. The program aims to prevent peatlands from further decaying, and to restore them as carbon sinks, by covering the costs for land owners, land managers and drainage service providers, and by providing them with compensation for economic harm. The European Commission said the aid would bring about positive effects that would outweigh any potential distortions of competition.Statement follows....
