EU Commission welcomes political agreement to address steel overcapacity

( April 14, 2026, 06:09 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The European Commission said it welcomes the political agreement reached Monday night between the European Parliament and member states on the measure to protect the EU steelmaking sector against global overcapacity, it said in a statement. The new measure sets tariff-free quotas at 18.3 million tons per year, with an out-of-quota duty set at 50 percent for 30 categories of steel products imported into the EU. The new measure, replacing the existing EU steel safeguard, needs formal approval from the EU institutions before it can enter into force.The statement follows....
