Christie's fined $194,000 for data breach in South Korea

( April 9, 2026, 05:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Auction house Christie’s had been fined 287.2 million won ($194,000) by South Korea’s privacy regulator for a data breach that affected 620 South Korean users. The Personal Information Protection Commission said Thursday that the breach exposed personal data including names, addresses, nationalities and identification numbers such as resident registration numbers or passport numbers. The incident occurred when a help desk employee was deceived by a voice phishing scam and granted a hacker access to internal systems. The regulator also found Christie's had weak security practices, including password reset based on minimal personal information, lack of secure verification and storage of sensitive data without encryption and unlawful collection of resident registration numbers.     The statement is attached (in Korean)....
