Kyoto Broadcasting gets corrective recommendation over freelance law breach

( March 31, 2026, 07:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Kyoto Broadcasting System on Tuesday received a corrective recommendation from Japan’s competition authority for violating the freelance worker protection law. According to the Japan Fair Trade Commission, the Kyoto-based broadcaster employed independent contractors for scriptwriting, on-air appearances, hairstyling and makeup. Between November 2024 and September 2025, the company failed to provide written contracts specifying payment terms and other conditions to 132 contractors, delayed payments to 110 contractors and reduced payments to 67 contractors by deducting bank transfer fees. The JFTC instructed the company to review whether similar practices have occurred since last September, to take corrective measures — including repaying the deducted amounts — and to implement steps to ensure compliance and prevent a recurrence.
